What is Fenix Marine Terminal?

Fenix Marine Services (FMS), often searched as the "FMS terminal", is the container terminal at Berths 302 to 305 (Pier 300) on Terminal Island in the Port of Los Angeles, 614 Terminal Way, Terminal Island, CA 90731, and its FIRMS code is Y257. Fenix Marine, FMS terminal and Y257 all point to the same facility. Definition

Fenix Marine Services (FMS) is a major container terminal operator at the Port of Los Angeles, located on Terminal Island. Formerly known as the APL terminal (Eagle Marine Services), Fenix Marine handles containers for several major shipping lines and is one of the largest terminals in the San Pedro Bay port complex.

Fenix Marine Terminal tracking allows freight forwarders to monitor container status through the Fenix Community Portal, which covers container tracking, appointments and the vessel, gate and empty receiving schedules, with EIRs delivered digitally.

Key Takeaways

  • Same terminal, three names: Fenix Marine Services, the FMS terminal and FIRMS code Y257 are the same facility at 614 Terminal Way, Terminal Island.
  • Tracking and appointments: The Fenix Community Portal (portal.fenixmarineservices.com) is where FMS takes appointments; older Voyage Control links now redirect there.
  • Appointments required: Every import, empty and export move needs an appointment in 30 minute blocks, with a 45 minute grace period, and FMS does not exempt appointments.
  • Hours: Monday to Thursday first shift 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and off peak second shift 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM; Friday closes to trucks at 3:30 PM when there is no second shift; weekends closed.
  • Scale: 292 acres, four 1,000 foot berths at 50 feet, 16 container cranes, eight on dock rail tracks served by Union Pacific and BNSF, and more than 1.2 million annual lifts.

Why Fenix Marine Terminal Matters for Freight Forwarders

As one of the primary gateways for transpacific trade, Fenix Marine Services handles significant volume from Asia to the United States. For freight forwarders, FMS is notable for:

  • Major carrier presence: CMA CGM and APL remain major customers, and FMS lists customer contact lines for APL, CMA CGM and COSCO.
  • Substantial capacity: 292 acres on Terminal Island, next to the ship turning basin and the deep sea channel.
  • Direct rail connections: Eight working tracks that can hold up to three double stack trains at once, accessible to Union Pacific and BNSF.
  • Strict appointment discipline: No appointment means no entry, so planning drives turn times at FMS.

Understanding Fenix Marine’s appointment system and tracking tools is essential for forwarders managing high volume Los Angeles imports and exports.

Major Shipping Lines at Fenix Marine Services

  • CMA CGM
  • APL
  • COSCO

FMS names CMA CGM and APL as major customers and publishes customer contact lines for APL, CMA CGM and COSCO. Confirm the terminal on each arrival notice, since carriers can move services between terminals.

Fenix Marine History and Ownership

The terminal began operating in 1997 as Eagle Marine Services, a subsidiary of American President Lines, which is why many forwarders still call it the APL terminal. EQT acquired it from CMA CGM in 2017 and renamed it Fenix Marine Services from 1 December 2017. In November 2021, CMA CGM agreed to buy EQT’s 90% stake based on an enterprise value of $2.3 billion, and on 4 January 2022 it completed the deal and became the sole owner. Our guide to APL terminal tracking covers the APL side of that history.

How to Track Containers at Fenix Marine Terminal

STEP 1

Access the Fenix Community Portal

Open portal.fenixmarineservices.com. This is the FMS portal for appointments, container tracking and schedules, and the old fenixmarine.voyagecontrol.com address now redirects here.

STEP 2

Enter container information

Search the container number (for example CMAU1234567) to see whether it is available and whether an appointment slot is open.

STEP 3

Clear the TMF and book the slot

For non exempt containers, the PierPass Traffic Mitigation Fee (TMF) must be cleared before the driver arrives. Book the 30 minute appointment and enter the truck license plate before arrival.

STEP 4

Use Mission Sync on terminal

FMS has moved to paperless transactions: kiosks no longer print tickets, and EIRs are available in the Mission Sync app and the appointment portal. Grounded import deliveries use the Mission Sync trucker app for staging and delivery instructions.

Fenix Marine Portal Login

The Fenix Marine login, FMS portal and FMS appointment pages that drivers and dispatchers search for are all the Fenix Community Portal. FMS also links a Customer Service Portal and an Import Service Center help desk, which is where Last Free Day extension requests and appointment problems go. For appointment issues, FMS availability clerks answer at 310-548-8815, option 1.

Fenix Marine Terminal Vessel Schedule

FMS publishes its vessel schedule inside the Fenix Community Portal, which its Online Services page lists alongside appointments, container tracking, the gate schedule and the empty receiving schedule. For vessel timing, also use the ocean carrier’s schedule for your service and the Marine Exchange of Southern California, which FMS lists in its industry links, and confirm the export receiving window with the carrier before you book a delivery appointment.

Fenix Marine Terminal Gate Hours

Day Gate Hours
Monday to Thursday, first shift 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM (grounded import delivery ends 4:30 PM)
Monday to Thursday, second shift (off peak) 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM (ingate closes 1:30 AM, grounded import delivery ends 2:30 AM)
Friday (stop work Thursdays or days without a second shift) 7:00 AM opening, closes to trucks at 3:30 PM; duals may not be accepted after 3:00 PM
Saturday and Sunday Closed

Important Notes: FMS posts these working hours under its Appointment System Policies on the terminal page, and its shift summary lists the day shift as 7:00 AM to 4:45 PM. FMS notes that all days worked, including holidays, count as free days. Second shift is the off peak shift under the PierPass OffPeak program, funded by the Traffic Mitigation Fee.

FMS Appointment System

Fenix Marine Services requires appointments for all transactions:

Transaction Type Appointment Required
Import pickup, including reefers and wheeled imports Yes
Export delivery Yes
Empty return Yes
Dual transactions Yes, each leg

Booking Appointments

  1. Sign in to the Fenix Community Portal
  2. Check container availability
  3. Clear the TMF (PierPass) for non exempt containers before the driver arrives
  4. Select a 30 minute appointment block; the driver has a 45 minute grace period before and after
  5. Enter the truck license plate before arrival

Tip: Book appointments early, since missed appointments are canceled immediately and trucks without an appointment are denied entry.

Watch out

A Last Free Day extension for no appointment availability needs proof: a Fenix Community Portal screenshot taken between 6:00 AM and noon the day before, and another between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM on the day, submitted through the Import Service Center. Without compliant screenshots, FMS grants no extension, and FMS no longer collects demurrage for the carriers, so disputes go to the ocean carrier.

Truck Requirements at FMS

Every truck needs a front license plate, registration as a Clean Truck with the Port of Los Angeles and a mounted Clean Truck RFID tag. Every occupant needs a valid TWIC and driver’s license. FMS does not charge, collect or invoice detention on empty containers; those disputes go to the ocean carrier.

How GoFreight Tracks Fenix Containers

Forwarders with volume through FMS and other San Pedro Bay terminals need appointment status and terminal availability next to the carrier milestones. GoFreight’s Shipment Tracking & Operations Software for Forwarders brings tracking data from ocean carriers, railroads, terminals and AIS vessel positions into the shipment record, and the Ocean Import Freight Management Software keeps the arrival notice, ISF and delivery order on the same file. GoFreight reports a 53% reduction in detention and demurrage fees for its customers.

Ship Faster. Scale Smarter.
